Hivos partner Syrian Media Centre for Freedom of Expression was raided and several people were arrested on 16 february. The SCM sends out a statement about the raid and the arrests.Though six woman who were arrested during the raid have been released under conditions, nine men are still in custody, the statement reads.
United nation independent experts comdemned the arrest of the human rights activists of Hivos partner Syrian Centre for Media and Freedom of Expression. The declaration reads:Last friday Catherine Ashton, spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, already issued a statement on the arrests.
President Bashar al-Assad’s security forces have raided the offices of human rights and free press organization SCM, arresting 16 persons, including director Mazen Darwish and Razan Ghazawi. Family members of Darwish were arrested in his home.
The satirical internet campaign ‘Subtitle the Tyrant’ is a great success. Two dictators featuring in the online competition, which invites Dutch people to add creative subtitles to videos of speeches held by dictators, have passed away. A third one is badly suffering due to increasing sanctions. In order to speed up the collapse of a fourth dictatorship, development organisation Hivos launched ‘Subtitle the Tyrant: the Syrian edition’.
