Hivos and SNV launched partnership to support Twaweza initiative
Development organisations Hivos and SNV have today signed a partnership to support the East African initiative Twaweza. Twaweza, meaning "we can make it happen" in Swahili, is a ten year initiative that seeks to enable people in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda to improve their quality of life through a bold, citizen-centred approach to development and public accountability. Earlier Hivos signed a similar agreement with the American Hewlett Foundation.
The partnership between Hivos and SNV aims to increase access to information related to these basic services in the forementioned African countries Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. As a result, citizens will be better able to openly express to government institutions their views on basic services. Furthermore, citizens will be enabled to monitor the quality of basic service delivery themselves.
Twaweza has two interlinked goals: to enable ten million people in East Africa to exercise greater agency or, in other words, be able to take initiative to improve their situation and hold government to account; and to access improved basic services (particularly basic education, primary health and clean water) and improve resource management to serve local interests.
Hivos will act as fund manager of the Twaweza initiative and will also stimulate innovative use of new media. Capacity builder SNV will strengthen the performance of local actors and ensure improvements in the accountability of public service providers to users. Earlier Hivos signed a contract with the Hewlett Foundation, also supporting Twaweza for 4.2 million US dollars for a period of two years.
