APUVIMEH
APUVIMEH, formerly known as the Coordinadora de Grupos de Autoapoyo de Tegucigalpa, is a community based initiative started in Tegucigalpa in 1998. Although the organization has a shelter (Casa Renacer) for HIV positive people who mainly come from rural areas to get care and services in the Hospitals of the capital, it is also an activist organization that strongly advocates for continued access to medicines and adecuate sercives for HIV care and prevention. The Coordinator works with 12 Self Support Groups (5 in Tegucigalpa and 7 in 3 departments) and advocates for the rights of PLWHA and LGBT populations. The Coordinator aims to strengthen its members in order to claim their rights and to demand adecuate services and social justice. They want the most affected people to be drivers of their own destiny and to become active in decision making processes and be active vigilants of the state's actions. The social basis of the groups is very diverse, men and women living with HIV/AIDS: sexual workers, homo/bisexual men and heterosexual women. During the last years, the organization has become more and more vocal on LGBT and human rights issues, especially in the aftermath of the political crises in Honduras. The HIV+ leaders carry out their jobs on a voluntary basis, sometimes independently and sometimes linked to public hospitals. The organization got its legal status in 2008, and is since then known as APUVIMEH (Asociacion para una vida mejor, Honduras). It has a Board of 6 persons and a tecnical 'Ad hoc committe' constituted by professional volunteers. Further, each self-support group has its own Board of directors. The participation of HIV+ women is very relevant in all of the activities carried out in benefit of Persons Living With HIV/AIDS, in general.

| En Honduras las PVVS en su mayoría son discriminadas y estigmatizadas por la sociedad y muchas veces por sus familiares, por esto, APUVIMEH continúa el trabajo con los grupos de autoapoyo y las capacitaciones a líderes. Actualmente, ésta población es más vulnerable frente a la situación política después del golpe de estado, porque se ha agudizado la crisis en la atención y prevención de las PVVS. Las lecciones aprendidas indican que es importante continuar el trabajo de alianzas con otras organizaciones, también se necesitan nuevos liderazgos entre las personas que viven con VIH, diseñar programas, políticas, y acciones publicas relacionadas con la atención integral, derechos humanos, monitoreo y evaluación y control del VIH/SIDA. APUVIMEH incorpora un componente de fortalecimiento institucional por medio de un Plan de incidencia política y participación ciudadana que contará con un plan institucional y otro plan en alianza con otras organizaciones. Entre otros, espera instalar un comité de derechos humanos que de seguimiento a quejas y denuncias de PVV sobre violaciones a sus derechos humanos. En esta fase 180 personas con VIH, organizados en 12 grupos de autoapoyo se beneficiarán directamente pues recibirán capacitación en derechos humanos, salud sexual y reproductiva, adherencia y otros temas de interés. Asimismo se formarán 30 lideres PVV para que puedan convertirse en voceros y defensores de las necesidades y derechos de la población que vive con VIH. |
