El Salvador is a highly populated country and there is a sector of micro enterprises that cannot find possibilities to credit through banking institutions. In this context, the existence of a series of organizations that channel credits for micro enterprises, have played an important role in the facilitation of channeling those financial resources to the micro enterprises in El Salvador. Apoyo Integral is a non-regulated financial institution that is in the process of transforming into a regulated institution. As a non-regulated institution Integral it is not able to mobilize deposits; however, it offers a variety of credit services including group and individual micro enterprise loans, small business loans, housing loans, emergency loans and consumer loans. It also offers remittance services. It became a client of HTF in April of 2004. Currently, APOYO INTEGRAL S.A., has 23,000 clients, of which 70% are women, specially micro and small entrepreneurs. The organization has thirteen offices for client support, and seventy-five credit advisors that work directly with the users. Among its associates, INTEGRAL has international credit organizations. One of Hivos' main objectives in the struggle against poverty is employment generation. The lack of employment in the formal sector in El Salvador has pushed hundreds of persons to open their own businesses. In this sense, in the case of El Salvador,, support for micro enterprises is an aspect of vital importance in the struggle against poverty. On the other hand, it is estimated that 60% of employment generated by the 'Mypes' is occupied by women. In this context, to support organizations that direct their work toward micro and small enterprises, such as APOYO INTEGRAL S.A. is an important action within Hivos' policies in El Salvador.
