Karagwe is one of the five districts of the Kagera Region, located in North-western Tanzania. KADERES was established in 1997 by 24 local inhabitants. The organisation was registered under the Societies Ordinance on 15 May 1998. Kaderes is an NGO and Non-Profit Sharing entity with registered offices in Kayanga town - Karagwe District. The goal of the founding members was to improve living standard of the community through socio-economic, cultural and environmental conservation and rehabilitation.
The main objectives of Kaderes are:
Mobilise financial, technical and material assistance for the disadvantaged individuals and groups e.g. women, children, youth, elderly, orphans, widows, widowers, etc. and extend possible assistance during emergency situations;
To promote developmental activities focusing on environmental protection and conservation;
To establish development and economic programmes in line with the government, other institutions for empowering disabled groups;
To create awareness on prevailing problems e.g. AIDS and STDs and different ways of preventing them;
To assist all efforts aimed towards the improvement of the health of women and children.
Kaderes today focuses on health and on economic development in particular. Within the health field, medicines and other supplies are distributed to local clinics. Within the economic field, 6 SACCOs have been established which in 2005 had reached a membership of almost 10,000. Hivos financed a pre-feasibility report on the promotion of rural financial institutions in Karagwe District, which became available in December 2001. The study was carried out by Financial Services and Enterprises Development Association (FISEDA) in Dar es Salaam. The study culminated in the preparation of a proposal, which forms the basis for the funding the establishment and development of these SACCOs.
