Virginia Perez Ratton, mother of the visual arts in Central America, passed away
Today the sad news reached us of the passing away of Virginia Perez Ratton, artist and art curator in San Jose, Costa Rica, at the age of 60 years.
Virginia Perez has devoted a large part of her life to the development of and support to the visual arts and artists of the Central American region. In the mid-nineties, Virginia organised a series of unique exhibitions of Central American artists when she was director of the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design of San Jose.
Since then, Virginia became a consistent driving force behind many initiatives, such as the foundation of Teoretica, the organisation of international exhibitions, workshops, conferences and the production of excellent publications. All this highly professional work has strongly put the Central American and Caribbean arts on the world map.
Hivos has been continuously supporting Virginia’s projects with great enthusiasm over the past 15 years, impressed by her great talents as a curator, networker and art theorist. The loss of Virginia, especially as a wonderful person, is a great shock and we wish Virginia’s relatives, her colleagues in Teoretica and friends much strength.
