Sumba: the first fully sustainable island
Without energy we cannot do anything, literally. Therefore Hivos launches a unique project: To completely supply the Indonesian island of Sumba with sustainable energy. In ten years Sumba will be the first fully sustainable island.
The project is a boost to the quality of life of hundreds of thousands of people in small island communities. CO2 emissions will be reduced and poverty systematically addressed. Using solar energy, hydropower plants, wind turbines and biogas installations, many more people will have access to energy.

The island where this objective will become reality is located in the Indonesian archipelago. Adjacent to West Timor in the east and Sumbawa in the west, Sumba has 650,000 inhabitants. On Sumba there is a small hydropower plant and some households make use of a solar panel. Diesel-driven generators remain the main energy source. Diesel is imported, is expensive and contributes to CO2 emissions. Reason enough to work on alternative energy sources. The project with the working title "Iconic Island" is a novelty.
Its rapidly growing population is an immense challenge for Indonesia. The impressive urbanization makes an increasing contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. A rapid transition to carbon free energy is needed to reduce CO2 emissions at a level at which adverse effects can be prevented.
The ambition of Hivos is a society that runs on 100% renewable, therefore sustainable energy.
Na het lezen van jullie project in sumba ben ik weer een beetje hoopvoller gestemd voor de ontwikkeling in sumba. Heb zelf daar via VSO nederland (2006 t/m 2008)een gezondheidsprogramma opgezet via de Yayasan harapan Sumba. Heb daar twee jaar gewoont in watabula.(west sumba) Ben nog steeds actief daar maar nu prive. Het doet me deugd dat sumba in de aandacht is en zeker op energie voorziening eindelijk een zicht op een toekomst met informatie op allerlei gebied. Wat zeker een bijdrage kan zijn tot ontwikkeling.
Als ik een bijdrage kan leveren bij deze stel ik mij beschikbaar. Ben zelf communitie health werker. Veel in de campongs gewerkt en lokale mensen opgeleid. Namens de mensen in sumba dank voor deze hulp met vriendelijke groet Ine
