Start of research programme for LBTs

Posted on 27/04/2009

A research programme for lesbian, bisexual and transgender women was launched on 19 April. The programme is financed by The Riek Stienstra Fund, a joint initiative of Hivos and women’s rights organisation Mama Cash, campaigns for lesbian, bisexual and transgender women (LBTs).

Four African and six Asian LBT activists will take part in this programme. After a brief training course, they will conduct research on the situation of LBT women around the world. LBT interest groups will make use of the knowledge and experience gained by these researchers. And that is sorely needed, because lesbian, bisexual and transgender women are still frequently the victims of violations of human rights.

Hivos has been committed to gay and lesbian rights since 1991. It is in fact the largest donor worldwide in the field of gay emancipation, as appears from the recently published report of the US Research Funder for Lesbian and Gay Issues.
