La Biennale di Venezia shows work of young socially responsible artists

Posted on 09/06/2009

Thursday June 4 was the opening of the Central Asia pavilion in the 53rd Venice Biennale, one of the most prominent world wide visual art exhibitions.

Six artists from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan show their works in the wonderful 13th centrury Palazzo Molin. The opening by the Alderwoman for culture of Venice was very well attended and the reactions to the exhibition was very positive.

Instead of the usual depiction of tradition, the works clearly deal with contemporary issues like the position of women in society, the post-Soviet inheritance and the strong creative impulse of the young generation.

All in all a successful statement by artists from a 'forgotten' region in a global platform. Hivos is proud to sponsor this event. You can visit the 53rd International Art Exhibition la Biennale di Venezia from June till November 2009.
