Invitation: we want to have your say about smallholders
One of the ways Hivos contributes to poverty reduction, is by quality improvement among groups of smallholders in coffee and vegetable production in Kenya and South Africa. These smallholders depend on markets for their livelihood. Main buyers in these markets increasingly demand compliance with a variety of standards. Therefore, in order to avoid being squeezed out of these markets, groups of smallholders need to respond to these demands.
In the past years Hivos collected experiences, which are now being systematized by Peter Knorringa of the Institute of Social Studies (ISS) and Coen van Beuningen (Hivos). The bottom-up approach is leading and based on the pilot projects in Kenya and South Africa. In the past weeks we checked our findings with the smallholder groups and the related support organizations in these pilot projects.
The report; “Inclusive Improvement: Focus on Groups of Smallholders”, analyses the daunting challenges for smallholders, and the as yet too unsystematic interventions by civil society organizations, including Hivos.
Now we welcome you to react on the report, specifically on the proposals to improve the support structure. A summary of the report can be downloaded. The full report can be obtained from Coen@Hivos.nl, to which address also reactions by email are welcomed before May 23.
