Hivos-activities on National AIDS Day 2008
Worldwide 33 million people are living with HIV, the majority of whom are living in developing countries. South Africa has the largest number of people with HIV (5.5 million). Nearly 70% of the people with HIV have no access to medicines, which led to nearly 2 million deaths in 2007. People with HIV are also often victims of discrimination and stigma. On 1 December the AIDS Day will be held around the world to show solidarity with people living with HIV.
The AIDS partners of Hivos - from Albania to Zimbabwe - are actively involved in organizing activities on this day. In the Netherlands, the AIDS Day will be held at RAI (Amsterdam) and it will attract nearly 1000 people. Hivos will be there with an Exhibition on Virus Free Generation Campaign - a campaign aimed at raising awareness among European youth and stimulating them to cooperate with African youth for lobby and advocacy on access to prevention and treatment in Africa. The Exhibition will involve paintings and posters developed by the youth in European and Africa involved in the campaign.
Hivos will also be in Senegal for the Biennial AIDS Conference in Africa (3-7 December), where together with AIDS partners it will organize a series of workshops on violence against women, challenges faced by men who have sex with men (MSM) and the impact of the Global Fund on civil society. In Africa Hivos supports nearly 40 AIDS partners to promote AIDS prevention, campaign for access to treatment and break taboos and stigma on sex and sexuality.
