Hivos acquires special consultative status with UN
The ECOSOC Committee on NGO’s has decided to grant Hivos special consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council. Organizations enjoying this status can attend meetings of ECOSOC and it’s Functional Commissions and circulate statements.
The special consultative status offers Hivos the opportunity to participate in public meetings of the United Nations. Hivos staff members, partners or specialists from Hivos’ network are now welcome to attend these meetings.
ECOSOC
ECOSOC is a platform that was set up in 1946 with the intention to give NGO’s a say in UN meetings. The platform consists of many different functional commissions. Examples include the Human Rights Committee and the Committee on the Status of Women. Other ECOSOC committees in which Hivos wants to contribute are the Commission on Human Rights and the Commissions for Sustainable and Social Development.
The accreditation is an important step for Hivos and its partner organizations. It offers the opportunity to lobby the UN official bodies for topics that are important for Hivos, such as women's and gay rights.
