Hivos director high on the list of Powerful Women
The Netherlands is known the world over for its support to worthy causes. And Hivos director Manuela Monteiro occupies an influential position within the country’s good cause sector. According to the Dutch magazine Opzij, she is the second most powerful woman in this sector.
This year Opzij compiled a list of the one hundred Most Powerful Dutch Women, divided into ten categories. Monteiro ranks second in the Good Cause category.
Women's rights
Monteiro, born in Portugal, owes her place on the list of Most Powerful Dutch Women to her work for Hivos, especially in the fields of women’s rights and emancipation. She has been executive director of Hivos since 2002. But the other positions she holds played a role as well. She is a member of the board of WOTRO, a division of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). WOTRO conducts research in the field of Global Development. And Monteiro holds several other posts. Among them are membership of the review committee for cultural anthropology and of the South-North Committee of Dutch Labour Party PvdA, currently a party in office.
Renowned
It was the first time in its existance that Opzij compiled a list of Most Powerful Dutch Women. The magazine was founded in 1972. Its title means ‘out of the way’ and includes the Dutch word for 'her' ('zij'). Over the years, the magazine has developed from a radical feminist monthly into a news magazine that gives coverage to a wide range of views on the emancipation of women. Articles focus on aspects such as culture, literature, international developments, work and career. Opzij has long been seen as an important indicator of the attitude of Dutch women to sexuality: it is renowned for publishing short stories and research in this field.
