Activist Shadi Sadr made work of the rights of women in Iran. But the latest winner of the Tulip Award saw her struggle blocked by the government. In Peru, Hivos partner DEMUS is also encountering opposition to that same struggle.

Shadi Sadr wins Tulip Award
She is not only a lawyer. She is also a defender of human rights – especially the rights of women in Iran. Last November, Shadi Sadr (1974) won the Tulip Award for her hazardous but indefatigable activism.
Hivos blacklisted in Iran
Iranian citizens are no longer allowed to have contact with Hivos. In January 2010, the Iranian government added Hivos to a list of sixty subversive organisations. Allegedly, Hivos was involved in attempts by Western governments to overthrow the Iranian establishment.
Funding for the fight against AIDS at Ibis-Hivos
Asociación Ibis-Hivos continues to fight against HIV/AIDS in Bolivia. The organisation is again allowed to manage the budget that The Global Fund makes available. The Global Fund agreed to this in January 2010.
