Martin Ennals Award for Iranian Human Rights Defender

The prestigious Martin Ennals Award 2009 will go to the Iranian human rights defender and journalist Emadedin Baghi. Baghi (1962) is a journalist and human rights activist. Since the 1980s he has been involved in peaceful efforts to improve the human rights situation in Iran, to achieve better treatment of prisoners and to abolish death penalty.

Woman’s Rights organisations Demus and Cladem have won an Gender Justice Uncovered Award. They received the Bronze Gavel Award 2009 for the Karen Llantoy vs. Peru-case, a groundbreaking case establishing that denying access to legal abortion violates women’s most basic human rights

Invitation: we want to have your say about smallholders

One of the ways Hivos contributes to poverty reduction, is by quality improvement among groups of smallholders in coffee and vegetable production in Kenya and South Africa. These smallholders depend on markets for their livelihood. Main buyers in these markets increasingly demand compliance with a variety of standards. Therefore, in order to avoid being squeezed out of these markets, groups of smallholders need to respond to these demands.

Music and arts in Uganda

The first festival in Uganda was held in 2008, organised by Bayimba Cultural Foundation, a Ugandan cultural organization. The Foundation is dedicated to making East Africa a significant hub for music and art culture on the African continent. In June 2008, more than 45 artists performed at the first Bayimba International Festival. For the second year Bambiya presents the successful international festival of culture and arts from June 12th till June 14th.
