Sustainable production

Hivos supports partner organisations and small producers who use natural resources in a responsible way and who provide better access to markets to improve incomes. In this way Hivos reinforces the technical and organisational skills of small producers. In addition, consumers and wholesalers are encouraged by Hivos to improve access to local and international markets for this group of producers. Access to sustainable energy is the number one priority in this process.

Sumba

Meet Island Sumba

Meet Island Sumba, an Indonesian island home to more than 650,000 people. Many of them do not have access to energy, which makes living conditions difficult. At night there is no light to do homework for example, or to continue working. Electricity that is available is generated with diesel generators. This is going to change. Hivos, in collaboration with others such as governments, the energy company and anyone who wishes to cooperate, is going to supply Sumba of 100% sustainable energy. Access to energy is something everyone is entitled to, and furthermore a vital condition to create more prosperity.

Sustainable development: A condition for economic growth

Sustainable development and equal access to markets, resources, knowledge, technology and capital are the goals of Hivos and its partner organisations. Hivos would like to demonstrate that alleviating poverty can go hand in hand with organic farming, energy savings, gentech- free crops and protecting biodiversity. Hivos is concerned with alleviating poverty and with stimulating sustainable development.

Quality markets: Equal chances for small producers

For many small farmers the road to the market is full of hurdles. They often face many trade barriers and inequalities, such as import duties and subsidies extended to competitors. For entrepreneurs and producers it is challenging to find the right gap in the market and to overcome these obstacles to produce goods that meet international social and environmental standards.

Energy, climate and the environment

Large-scale deforestation, water pollution, global warming and loss of local crops show us that sustainable development is impossible without the use of sustainable energy and the maintenance of biodiversity and traditional crops. Hivos makes energy accessible to the poor and ensures responsible energy production, for example with the Hivos Climate Fund.

The Biodiversity Fund: Producing without harming the ecosystem

The conservation of biodiversity is still threatened by the large-scale plundering of natural resources, monocultures in agriculture, irresponsible use of pesticides and genetically modified organisms. Hivos supports activities that allow people to shape their own lives while at the same time protecting their ecosystems. Its most important tool in this area is the Biodiversity Fund (BDF).

Facts, figures and results

In 2010, 20 percent of Hivos' total budget was allocated to 145 partner organisations in the field of sustainable production.

Policy Document Sustainable Economic Development

To Hivos, sustainable development has three important characteristics: it does not compromise the possibilities of future generations, it does not compromise the possibilities of other regions, and it integrates the social, economic and environmental aspects of development. Read more in the policy document.

Renewable energy

Renewable energy: a driving force for development

If climate change has made anything clear it is this: the Netherlands and other rich industrialised countries have been living beyond their means. This has disastrous consequences for the lives of poor people in developing countries and that is unacceptable. Hivos has made its choice – as have the partner organisations presented in the brochure. Hivos opts for renewable energy.
