Social movements. Toward a colourful society
Hivos aims for a colourful society: A society in which discrimination based on race and sexual preferences has been eliminated from the laws. A society in which sexual and ethnic minorities may form organisations, claim their rights and associate with human rights organisations.
As Hivos sees matters, minorities deserve our complete attention, whether they are Native Americans or gays. That is why Hivos supports social movements that fight lawlessness and champion equal access to social facilities, healthcare and medicines for indigenous populations, casteless people and LGBTs (lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transsexuals).
It is not easy to bring together people and organisations and to drive the process of emancipation in repressive societies. One of the reasons for the problems is that the social and emancipatory movements themselves are too weak and often work secretly. Nevertheless, Hivos believes that it is precisely those movements that encourage those specific groups to come together, gain confidence and develop their own identity.
For Hivos, the right of self determination is crucial. During the coming years, it will focus primarily on equal rights for LGBTs.
The Hivos approach in a nutshell:
- Hivos supports campaigns demanding collective rights for minorities;
- Hivos fights discrimination, homophobia and xenophobia in all their forms;
- Hivos addresses LGBT issues in human rights organisations and women’s organisations;
- Hivos supports national and global coalitions;
- Hivos enhances the input of social movements from developing countries at international institutions such as the United Nations;
- Hivos promotes proportional representation of women in every layer of organisations.
