Human rights & democratisation

Hivos works to bring about fair, democratic and equal societies. That is why Hivos supports organisations in developing countries in their fight to further democracy and help poorer groups participate fully in decision-making processes. These organisations work toward improved availability of the legal system and help human rights campaigners to advocate for better legislation. Special attention is devoted to social movements such as the gay rights movement, indigenous peoples and dalits.

Human rights and democratisation as the foundations for development

Balanced, fair and sustainable development is only possible if all groups of a country’s society have their say in decision-making processes. Crucial elements in that respect are the existence of democratic structures and a varied society in which human rights are respected. In that way, human rights are the foundation of development.

Human rights. Fighting for the rule of law and universal rights

Human rights are for everyone and everywhere. That message has been sent out across the world. Yet in many places it still has to be realised. Hivos advocates fair and affordable administration of justice for citizens and protection of human rights campaigners and organisations. This will allow them to successfully enforce national and international laws governing equality and availability of justice.

Democratisation. People's opinions matter

A society cannot flourish properly unless everyone in every layer of society can speak their piece: about their government, for example, but also about the legal system and their own lives. No country can develop without human rights and democratisation. Hivos supports organisations that fight for democratisation, for the rights of the poor and for combating corruption and immunity to punishment.

Social movements. Toward a colourful society

Hivos aims for a colourful society: A society in which discrimination based on race and sexual preferences has been eliminated from the laws. A society in which sexual and ethnic minorities may form organisations, claim their rights and associate with human rights organisations.

Facts, figures and results

In 2010, 17 percent of Hivos' total budget was allocated to 182 partner organisations in the field of human rights and democratisation.

Policy document Human Rights & Democratisation

Human rights is a sectoral domain, but it also lies at the foundation of Hivos’ vision and programme, relating to civil society building (political and cultural rights) and economy and sustainable development (social and economic rights). The purpose of this document is to clarify the position of human rights within the overall Hivos policy as well as within the sectoral policies.
