No future prospects without imagination
Art and culture are vital forms of communication in development processes. They help to create a climate in which ideas can be exchanged freely. People will have no future prospects, and consequently no hope of change, if imagination is lacking. Hivos supports independent and innovative initiatives of artists and cultural organisations in developing countries.
Cultural and artistic expressions that help promote democratisation and variety: that is the central focus of Hivos’ Art & Culture activities. Hivos is one of the few development organisations to recognise the power of art in the development in African, Asian and Latin American countries. That is why Hivos encourages local productions in the fields of visual arts, theatre, film, literature and media art and why it also helps to strengthen the cultural sector in developing countries.
In 2007 Hivos adjusted its cultural policy by placing a greater emphasis on the strategic level: improving coordination between donors, supporting regional initiatives and devoting greater attention to the distribution and accessibility of productions.
Hivos intends its Art & Culture policy to contribute to:
- the creation of artistic and cultural productions, e.g. exhibitions, performances and festivals;
- the shaping of new talent by aiding art education, workshops and exchange programmes;
- improved access to artistic and cultural expressions, products and productions, using such tools as subsidising theatre, film festivals and book fairs;
- the reinforcement and further professionalism of cultural organisations, in such areas as management and institutional capacity.
