Financial services & enterprise development

Hivos firmly believes that people are well capable of shaping their own futures if they are given the resources to do so. For this reason, Hivos supports microfinance institutions providing facilities to save as well as to take loans to millions of people in developing countries, allowing them to earn their own livings. With business development, Hivos takes this one step further. By offering training and advice we contribute to increasing employment by encouraging professional entrepreneurship. Influencing national policies of developing countries to improve access to financial services, particularly for the poor and marginalised, is another goal.

»

Sustainable production

Hivos supports partner organisations and small producers who use natural resources in a responsible way and who provide better access to markets to improve incomes. In this way Hivos reinforces the technical and organisational skills of small producers. In addition, consumers and wholesalers are encouraged by Hivos to improve access to local and international markets for this group of producers. Access to sustainable energy is the number one priority in this process.

»

Human rights & democratisation

Hivos works to bring about fair, democratic and equal societies. That is why Hivos supports organisations in developing countries in their fight to further democracy and help poorer groups participate fully in decision-making processes. These organisations work toward improved availability of the legal system and help human rights campaigners to advocate for better legislation. Special attention is devoted to social movements such as the gay rights movement, indigenous peoples and dalits.

»

HIV/AIDS

Hivos regards AIDS to be a matter of human rights and development, and as such supports organisations that champion the rights of people with HIV/AIDS and break taboos surrounding HIV/AIDS and sexuality. The Hivos partner organisations focus their efforts on prevention and empowerment and on stimulating free expression of sexuality. They also advocate for access to medicines, effective national AIDS policies and compliance with international treaties.

»

Art & Culture

Hivos believes that art and culture perform a vital role in the advancement of democratic and varied societies. That is why Hivos supports independent and innovative initiatives in Africa, Asia and Latin America that serve to inspire people, stimulate creativity and create possibilities for dialogue. Priorities include encouraging local cultural productions and festivals; developing new talent, developing national and international cultural exchange projects; organising cultural debates and improving the cultural infrastructure.

»

Gender, women and development

Hivos supports women’s organisations that champion the rights of women and strive to increase the degree of participation by women in decision-making processes. This means helping women to become less vulnerable, more independent and more empowered, including with regard to their own bodies and sexuality. Improving the position of women and their participation in decision-making processes are a recurring theme in all organisations and programmes supported by Hivos.

»

ICT & media

Hivos regards ICT as an important instrument for development, as it helps partner organisations to work more efficiently and more effectively. That is why Hivos promotes the strategic use of ICT by providing training and financial assistance. The Hivos media programme also serves to give a voice to critical and alternative views from society. Hivos similarly operates where technology and human rights meet, and advocates protection of the privacy of online protesters and freedom of expression.
