Simon Pánek new President Alliance2015
Simon Pánek is the new President of Alliance2015. Pánek, director and co-founder of People in Need, replaces Vagn Berthelsen from IBIS, who is ending his four-year term.
Hivos is part of the Alliance2015, a strategic partnership of seven European development NGOs working together to play their part in reaching the Millennium Development Goals. Alliance2015 cooperates at the programme level in developing countries and at the policy level in Europe. For the past seven years, a key focus of that policy work has been Europe’s development policies.
Velvet Revolution
At the end of the 1980s, Simon Pánek was at the heart of the events that came to be known as the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia. As a young student, he was one of the organisers of the anti-regime occupation strikes and served as co-chairman of the Central Students Strike Committee. The events were the catalyst for the rapid collapse of the communist regime.
During the last twenty years, Pánek has been active in documentary film production, served as a member of Vaclav Havel’s Presidential Office - working in the Department of Foreign Policy - and chaired the Board of the Open Society Fund Prague. Since 2004, Pánek has been the Chair of the Czech NGO development platform FoRS, a member of the European Council on Foreign Relations, a member of the Board of the European Partnership for Democracy and a member of the Board of Eurostep.
