Goldman Environmental Award for Hivos partner Humberto Ríos
Humberto Ríos Labrada from Hivos partner INCA in Cuba has received the prestigious Goldman Award 2010 for his work with Cuban farmers. Humberto Ríos coordinates the programme for local agrarian innovation PIAL. The programme combines traditional farmer practices with modern scientific insights, making use of biodiversity for climate proofing of agriculture and organic practices for soil regeneration.
The Goldman Award is considered the alternative “Nobel Prize” for outstanding action in environmental conservation.
Humberto Ríos Labrada, a scientist and biodiversity researcher, worked with farmers to increase crop diversity and develop low-input agricultural systems, encouraging Cuba’s shift from agricultural chemical dependence toward sustainability. INCA's objective is to generate and transfer updated knowledge, integrate technologies and new products of biotechnology, crop science and sustainable systems, to efficiently raise agricultural and foodstuff production.
Sustainable energy
Hivos supports partner organisations and small producers who use natural resources in a responsible way and who provide better access to markets to improve incomes. In this way Hivos reinforces the technical and organisational skills of small producers. In addition, consumers and wholesalers are encouraged by Hivos to improve access to local and international markets for this group of producers. Access to sustainable energy is the number one priority in this process.
