Omidyar Network and Hivos announce transparency initiative
Philanthropic investment firm Omidyar Network and Hivos today announced the creation of the Africa Transparency and Technology Initiative (ATTI). It is the first fund in Africa to support the incubation of technology-driven initiatives that give citizens the tools to hold their governments to account.

Stop Child Labour urges companies to transparency and action
The campaign ‘Stop Child Labour – School is the best place to work’ expresses its serious concern about child and underpaid labour in Turkish hazelnut harvesting. Dutch TV news magazine ‘EenVandaag’ on the 19th of October broadcasted a feature story showing that children – from around 8 years of age – are working around 11 hours a day in hazelnut harvesting. Turkey is producing around 75% of all hazelnuts in the world.

Virginia Perez Ratton, mother of the visual arts in Central America, passed away
Today the sad news reached us of the passing away of Virginia Perez Ratton, artist and art curator in San Jose, Costa Rica, at the age of 60 years.
Virginia Perez has devoted a large part of her life to the development of and support to the visual arts and artists of the Central American region. In the mid-nineties, Virginia organised a series of unique exhibitions of Central American artists when she was director of the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design of San Jose.

Manuela Monteiro during MSM conference: "Be Heard!"
The 18th biennial International Aids Conference was held in Vienna this summer. From July 23 to 25, around 25.000 scientists, doctors, policy makers, aidsactivists, nurses and journalists met. Hivos director Manuela Monteiro gave a speech during the Men having Sex with Men Pre Conference.
