Hivos Alliance focuses on active citizenship
Programme goals
People Unlimited 4.1 consists of four programmes building on the current policies of the four organisations. Active citizenship comes first and gender (mainstreaming) remains central in each programme.
The Expression & Engagement
programme aims to expand the space for free expression and freedom of speech and increase the involvement of citizens, as these are essential ingredients for an open, democratic and pluralistic society.
The Rights & Citizenship
programme aims to create a more representative civil society, encouraging citizens to take action and contribute to a democratic, fair and pluralistic society.
The Green Entrepreneurship
programme improves the economic position of poor and marginalized men and women allowing them to take part as full citizens in politics, society and the economy.
The Action for Change
programme encourages policy makers, businesses and citizens in the North to support developing countries with campaigns such as 100%sustainable (100%duurzaam), Stop Child Labour (Stop Kinderarbeid) and Women@work.
New countries
The Hivos Alliance will be active in 31 countries. These are largely the same countries in which the four organizations have already been working. Hivos will set up new programmes in Sierra Leone and Liberia.
As of 1 January 2011 Hivos will no longer be active in El Salvador, Costa Rica, Kyrgyzstan, Mozambique and Sri Lanka.
Five year plan
This summer the Hivos Alliance applied for a grant of the Dutch government of 413 million Euros for the years 2011-2015. Whether or not this grant will be awarded (in full or part) will be announced at the end of 2010.
