‘Green energy for developing countries!’
Fossil fuels are becoming increasingly scarce and more expensive. So far this has mainly affected developing countries. Sustainable energy is the solution for their growing energy poverty. However, there is still very little attention for this in EU policy for development cooperation. That’s one of the conclusions of the research report Sustainable energy in development countries.
Sustainable energy is not mentioned in as many as 15 of the 99 EU country programmes as a solution for energy poverty. This was concluded by EEPA (Europe External Policy Advisors) who were commissioned by Hivos to study the programmes. However, the European Union will review its development policy in 2010. According to EEPA and Hivos this will be the ideal opportunity to make a radical change and start promoting sustainable energy globally.
