International meeting about resource mobilisation for women’s organising and women’s rights: a success!

Posted on 08/12/2009

“Let’s put the Money where our mouth is”. With these words Hivos Executive Director Manuela Monteiro opened an international meeting about resource mobilisation for women’s organising and women’s rights. The two-day meeting, 30 November – 1 December, was co-hosted by the Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID), Hivos and Mama Cash. Representatives from women’s rights organisations, donor agencies and women’s funds discussed the latest AWID research about funding trends for women’s rights and the impact of the financial crisis and the economic recession on women and women’s rights organisations.

Poor women in developing countries bear the brunt of the global crisis. Women are losing jobs, income and livelihoods. They have to work longer in order to make ends meet. They cut down their expenditures for healthcare and education. Girls are taken out of school to assist their mothers with the domestic chores and in the fields. The economic recovery packages of governments do not take into account the interests of women and girls.

The meeting in Amsterdam was build on AWID’s action-research ‘Where is the Money for Women’s Rights?’ Since 2005, AWID has published periodic research reports that highlight the lack of attention and funding for women’s rights and women’s rights organisations. The most recent report presented in Amsterdam pointed at a positive trend. A number of funders are interested (again) to invest in the rights and opportunities for women and girls. AWID’s research has strategically contributed to this result. How to maintain this support, in times of economic recession, and how to expand the support for women’s rights in the future, were central topics at the meeting in Amsterdam.
