Human Rights defender killed in Honduras
Walter Tróchez was shot and killed last Sunday when walking in the streets of Tegucigalpa. Walter was a prominent member of an LGBT /HIV activist group supported by Hivos, and part of the Popular Resistance Movement. His commitment to justice touched many, and will continue to resound in Honduras.
Walter had already been arrested during the street protests from the Resistance Movement two weeks ago. During his arrest he was specially harassed for being gay. Being a witness to an arbitrary police killing during later riots, he suffered several threats and arrests before. Now it seems he has become the deadly victim of a mixture of political crime and hate crime.
Hivos Regional Office and partner organizations in the region take up the issue. The (criticized) recent Honduras elections may have brought sort of a political solution, but they certainly have not restored democracy and respect for human rights.
