The current developments in Nairobi are remarkable. The city is rushing with energy in what is increasingly becoming an important focal point in the global information society. The presence of the ICANN meeting, that saw the launch of the .af domain name campaign, is only one small sign of Nairobi’s increasing global/Africa status and for good reason. There are entrepreneurs everywhere. New companies, innovative initiatives and a growing community of people eager to literally put themselves on the map!
ElectroSmog Live: International Festival for Sustainable Immobility
ElectroSmog is a new festival that revolves around the concept Sustainable Immobility. Between the 18th and 20th of March the festival will introduce and explore this concept in theory and practice. Sustainable Immobility refers to a critique of current systems of hyper mobility of people and products in travel and transport, and their ecological unsustainability. Everybody is welcome to participate directly online.

On 4 March I attended a lively and rich discussion on some of the latest findings that are part of the larger multiple-year AWID research on Resisting and Challenging Fundamentalisms. AWID has undertaken eighteen in depth case studies to grasp how religious fundamentalisms, in different contexts and different religions, operate, how they appeal or not to women, how they impact on women’s rights and women’s activism.
Hivos feliciteert zangeres Giovanca met Buma Zilveren Harp
Vorig jaar was Giovanca met de Rootsriders voor Hivos Linkis in Tanzania om daar workshops te geven aan jong muzikaal talent. Woensdag 4 maart ontving Giovanca de Buma Zilveren Harp 2009. Bekijk de video van de prijswinnares terwijl ze lesgeeft aan jongeren die commercieel aan de slag willen met hun zangtalent in Tanzania.
Op dit moment zijn de Rootsriders, zonder Giovanca, actief in contact met diverse Afrikaanse muzikanten. Bij de succesvolle optredens in Nederland verzamelen ze Instruments4Afrika waarmee muzikanten in Afrika aan de slag kunnen.
