Hivos International goes digital

Numerous partner organisations of Hivos work to make the world a better place. Our quarterly publication Hivos International offers them an impression of each other’s efforts. As of December 2009 the newsletter will appear in an exclusively digital version. You can also read the articles online on this page.

»

Sustainable production

In Asia, small-scale producers see increasing chances of a better life. In India, Hivos and its partners are encouraging the fair trade market. And in Indonesia they are helping small-scale palm oil farmers to compete with big companies.

»

Research

Hivos director Manuela Monteiro is second on the list of the most powerful Dutch women in the Good Causes sector. In her work she stresses the importance of research – for example, of the limitations of NGOs under authoritarian regimes.

»

Gay and Lesbian Emancipation

It is dangerous to deviate from the heterosexual norm. In Honduras you can be killed for it – without your murderer even being prosecuted. And in Uganda you are at risk of being sentenced to death. For local Hivos partners, this is the absolute limit.

»

Human rights

Activist Shadi Sadr made work of the rights of women in Iran. But the latest winner of the Tulip Award saw her struggle blocked by the government. In Peru, Hivos partner DEMUS is also encountering opposition to that same struggle.

Publications

A clear brochure about how to turn the tide of climate change. A razor-sharp research report to combat energy poverty. Profound working documents to deal with growing fundamentalism. And a book in which sex workers break down the prejudices surrounding their profession.
