Posted on 21/02/2012

Hivos and XS4ALL kindly invite you to the book launch of 'Consent of the Networked'; The Worldwide Struggle for Internet, by Rebbeca MacKinnon. A book launch for everybody  in politics, business and the nonprofit sector,  interested in freedom of personal and political expression in the 21st century.

A global struggle for control of the Internet is now underway. Nothing less than our civil  liberties, privacy and even  the character of democracy  in the 21st  century are at take. Consent of the Networked is a call to action and shows that it is time to stop arguing over whether the Internet empowers people, and address the urgent question of how  technology should be governed to support the rights and liberties of users around the world.

Drawing upon two decades of  experience as an international  journalist, co-founder of  the citizen media network and Hivos partner Global Voices, Chinese Internet censorship expert, and Internet freedom activist, MacKinnon offers a framework for concerned citizens to understand the complex and often hidden power dynamics amongst governments, corporations, and citizens in cyberspace.

Hivos and XS4ALL believe that free exchange of  information, space for expression and opportunity for active participation of citizens are essential conditions for the development of a democratic society, and have been working towards this end for over a decade.
