Biodiversity Fund

The Biodiversity Fund is established in 2000 by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs to alleviate poverty through sustainable use of biodiversity. The Funds’ focus is not on conservation per se. It focuses on the sustainable access, use and management of biodiversity for the poor’s production processes and the marketing of these products.

The Fund also aims to create the necessary conditions for biodiverse economies to survive and flourish. Furthermore the Fund brings in a much needed civil society voice into the policy arena of sustainable biodiversity management

Bio Brochure - Linking sustainable diversitymanagement and poverty allevation

In the global context, particularly for many rural economies, poverty alleviation is entangled with the sustainable use and development of biologically diverse resources. In such settings local people rely on these resources for their livelihoods. Strengthening access to, and use of these resources provides security and resilience for the poor in the face of shocks and stresses in the environment and markets.

“At least 40% of the world’s economy and 80% of the needs of the poor are derived from biological resources…the richer the diversity of life, the greater the opportunity for medical discoveries, economic development, and adaptive responses to such new challenges as climate change.” What is biodiversity and why does it matter?
