Sustainable development: A condition for economic growth
Sustainable development and equal access to markets, resources, knowledge, technology and capital are the goals of Hivos and its partner organisations. Hivos would like to demonstrate that alleviating poverty can go hand in hand with organic farming, energy savings, gentech- free crops and protecting biodiversity. Hivos is concerned with alleviating poverty and with stimulating sustainable development.
Globally, including in the Netherlands, social and ecological certification of produce and socially responsible entrepreneurship are on the rise. Everyone in the entire production chain holds responsibility for ensuring a sustainable and fair product, from the supplier of seeds to international traders, from large supermarkets to consumers. Hivos supports partner organisations who take the limits of natural resources and the interests of future generations into account in all their activities.
It is often difficult for small producers in developing countries to make ends meet. Hivos strives to allow small producers to meet the requirements of sustainable production. Decent quality systems are thus a key priority of Hivos. We support organisations who offer sustainable alternatives and who advocate for internationally recognised production standards, both socially and ecologically.
In addition, Hivos motivates businesses and retail chains to become part of quality markets such as Utz Kapeh. Hivos also works to harmonise different certification systems. Certification is relatively expensive, but if farmers qualify for a range of quality seals at the same time – for instance for organic produce, fair trade and fair working conditions - it can make a real difference.
Hivos considers sustainable energy to be an important condition for development and therefore contributes to making sustainable energy accessible for poor people in developing countries.
