HIV/AIDS

Hivos regards AIDS to be a matter of human rights and development, and as such supports organisations that champion the rights of people with HIV/AIDS and break taboos surrounding HIV/AIDS and sexuality. The Hivos partner organisations focus their efforts on prevention and empowerment and on stimulating free expression of sexuality. They also advocate for access to medicines, effective national AIDS policies and compliance with international treaties.

To fight HIV/AIDS is to fight poverty and inequality

Over forty million people around the world are infected with the HIV virus. Ninety percent of people with the HIV virus live in developing countries. Structural poverty is an important cause: being poor means not having access to care, information and medicines, but it also means not having a say in matters that help to improve quality of life. Hivos supports local organisations working on education, prevention and advocacy.

Education and emancipation as tools to fight taboos and prejudice

Proper education and prevention go hand in hand. They form the foundation for the fight against AIDS. In many cases, people in developing countries have no access to information. The fight against HIV/AIDS is also made more difficult by inequality between men and women, taboos, prejudice and misinformation. That is why Hivos supports partner organisations that educate people about HIV/AIDS.

Advocating for medicines in national and international arenas

Every person is entitled to a healthy life, just as he or she is entitled to information, privacy and the free expression of sexuality. These human rights apply to everyone, including people with HIV/AIDS. Access to medicines is a basic right of people, wherever in the world they may be. Hivos supports organisations that advocate on the national and international arenas to realise people’s right to medicines.

Facts, figures and results

In 2010, 19 percent of Hivos' total budget was allocated to 79 partner organisations in the field of HIV/AIDS.

Policy document HIV/AIDS

This policy paper elaborates on Hivos’ AIDS policy for the immediate future and identifies the activities and target groups that require support. The results of an external review served as an important input to the new policy. This review comprised a survey of the views of Hivos’ partners in the South and other experts on the results of Hivos’ efforts up until now and their ideas for future policy.
