Centro Nacional de Prevencion de las ITS/
The first AIDS decease happened in Cuba in 1986. Since then Cuba's policy towards AIDS patients was to intern them in sanatoriums for their treatment. In 1993 policy changed: persons living with HIV/AIDS, could choose to be interned in a sanatorium or to be treated from their homes. In 1998, a national co-ordination Centre in Havana, which would provide persons living with HIV with education, counselling, information and documentation, was officially launched. Hivos supports this initiative from the start.
The Centre has a staff of 20. They are organised in 8 working areas: Mass Media, Training, Research, Counselling face-to-face and by telephone, Social marketing of condoms, Cross-sectoral approach to society, Medical Documentation and working with persons living with HIV. Some staff members are persons living with HIV themselves. Promoting the self-organisation of this group in self-supporting groups GAMs (Grupos de Ayuda Mutua) is also the Centre's concern and one of its chosen strategies. At the moment they gather 120 volunteers who are actively involved in education and AIDS prevention activities at the national level.
