The Hivos network
Joining forces with others is crucial to the work of Hivos. Nationally and internationally, Hivos cooperates with many partner organisations throughout Africa, Asia and Latin America. It maintains relationships with various organisations in the Netherlands and other European countries, and it belongs to a number of national and international networks.
The core of the work of Hivos lies in its cooperation with over 600 partner organisations in 26 developing countries including Bolivia, Zimbabwe, Indonesia and Irak. In 2010 as much as 98 percent of the total Hivos budget was allocated to projects of partner organisations. This amounted to 73.7 million euros in 2007.
In the Netherlands Hivos cooperates with a wide range of organisations and businesses, particularly within the context of awareness raising, advocacy and knowledge sharing. Prominent cooperation agreements are those between Hivos and OneWorld, Coolpolitics, the National Association of Fair Trade Shops and the Institute of Social Studies.
In addition, Hivos maintains good working relationships with various humanist organisations in the Netherlands and Europe. Hivos belongs to the Humanist Alliance, a network of more than 50 humanist organisations in the Netherlands. On a European level, Hivos works together with like-minded organisations in the global humanist network International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU).
The most important network for Hivos in Europe is Alliance2015 with member organisations from Ireland (Concern), Denmark (Ibis), Germany (Deutsche Welthungerhilfe), Czech Republic (People in Need), Italy (Cesvi) and France (Acted). The Alliance members cooperate closely in awareness raising and advocacy in Europe (through the ‘Stop Child Labour – School is the Best Workplace’ and ‘Virus Free Generation’ campaigns) and also pursue complementarity in structural development and emergency operations in various developing countries.
Presently Hivos and fellow organisations in Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, Denmark and Ireland are also closely involved with the realisation of the eight Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations. For example, Hivos is part of the Dutch Platform of Millennium Goals (NPM) and is actively participating in the ONE-campaign, mobilising the Dutch to contribute toward achieving the Millennium Development Goals. One of these goals is to reduce global poverty by 50% by the year 2015.
